Mulch protects the topsoil from drying out, slows down the growth of weeds, and also reduces temperature fluctuations in the winter and summer months. For mulching, the middle fraction of pine bark mulch is used.
Before pouring the mulch, be sure to remove the weeds. In order to avoid weeding for a longer period, it is recommended to lay geotextiles before laying the mulch layer. This is best done when forming new flower beds.
Mulch is poured into the base (bottom) of the flower bed with a layer of 5-7 cm, in turn, at the base of the plants themselves, the layer should be thinner – about 3-4 cm.
The finer mulch can be used to overwinter plants, for example, for roses.
It should be noted that the finer mulch (e.g. sawdust) compresses faster and prevents water from entering the soil.
